Forest Bathing
I practice Shinrin-yoku or Forest Bathing, the Japanese practice of immersing yourself in nature to improve health and well-being. In these pieces, I translate my “conversations” with the nature, water, lichen and the forest to visual signals that engage emotions and neural pathways - my own and those of my viewers.
Inspired by Zen poetry and painting, and the rich colors of Abstract Expressionism, my work is a spontaneous call and response to the statements I pose with each brush stroke. Watercolor allows an immediacy that translates the story of how I feel the world as an artist. By splashing, feathering, marking, masking to maintain the plane of the paper, watercolor paints are layered in my pieces. I compose with each brush stroke a new conversation using the language of color, motion, and structural forms.
